小蝶返 Kochōgaeshi – small butterfly counter

Kochōgaeshi the sixth technique

小 – small or little
蝶 – butterfly
返 – turn, counter, return

Japanese butterfly

This technique refers specifically to a small butterfly – typically butterfly is written as 蝴蝶 both kanji meaning butterfly or 胡蝶 foreign-butterfly. Both pronounced kochō.

The idea here is of the small butterfly lightly fluttering and flitting around, able to constantly change or reverse direction. When the butterfly lands it is a light and silent movement. Again you can see the link between kenjutsu and sōjutsu – the idea of henchō 変蝶 changing butterfly movement with the yari. There is no heavy footed stomping or crashing down. The lesson of moving like a small butterfly, light on the feet, is present in all taijutsu, for example think of 四方天地飛 shihō tenchi tobi.
